With your face pressed close to mine So near that I can hardly see I only know the way you breathe I've dreamed you this way many times You take my hand while deep in sleep It's a kindness you won't recall I watch the blackness of the wall But you see me in your dreams How many times will I dream this dream That you will always dream of me How many nights will I lie awake in hope That you will always hope for me How many times will I dream this dream That you will always dream of me How many nights will I lie awake in hope That you will always hope for me

With you there's nothing new And nothing to forget I remembered everything I knew In the moment that we met So how could I grow tired of you How could I grow tired of you Why would I get bored When the same sun rises every day And casts me in a new shade of gold As I look to you and say How could I grow tired of you How could I grow tired of you Don't I know the lifetimes That tell stories in your eyes And whose hand do I find in mine Under endless starry skies So how could I grow tired of you How could I grow tired of you

As I Am 03:58
I've sailed through many storms I don't need sunny weather Or love that crumbles in the sand He walks into the room Like a man who needs no other He's come to take me as I am And under his touch There is nowhere else to belong Under his breath There is no need to be strong And who can I trust To take complete control Who can I trust With it all When I wake up and see I've bled right through the sheets He's there to do my laundry And in his embrace There is nothing I need to change And in his eyes There is nothing out of place Tell me who can I trust To take complete control of me Who can I trust With the whole of me When I turn the sun to rain And when I bring the thunder To a gentle moonlit sky He walks into my storm Like a man who needs no shelter He knows who he has come to find And under his hands There is nowhere I need to run He has no plans Of what I should become See I've found a man Who can handle the soul of me Who I can trust with the whole of me He walks into the room Like a man who needs no other He's come to love me as I am

Does she see herself in the water She's got the eyes of her mother In the movements of her face Her ancestors come together And man says Let us make God in Her image Make Her ruler over the sea Maybe she will heal the damage For we are thirsty Can he hear his breath in the moonlit night He knows the ways of a hunter Though we cannot keep the time At the end of every life begins another And we'll say Let us make God in his image Make him keeper of the land Maybe he'll restore the balance For we are hungry

What if I help someone more than myself What if I loved them more than myself What if I gave away all that I have left Could I be more than myself

about

Freedoms is the debut album by Heidi Savoie and some of Toronto’s most exciting young artists. To make an independent album of almost all original work is a daring endeavour in a sound-saturated world where overstimulated listeners crave familiarity. Savoie steps into the world of orchestral jazz as a songwriter, arranger, pianist, and vocalist. She says this project is the result of asking “what would I be doing if I could do anything?”. It turns out “anything” means collecting mason jars and scoring string and accordion music for a horn-dominated genre.

Despite the recording process being complicated by pandemic restrictions, the musicians came together resourcefully. The multi-instrumentalist and sound engineer Blake Hamilton tirelessly ran a problem-solving marathon in order to make the musicians feel as if they were in the same room together, despite being recorded remotely. Cole Canaday and Michelle Faehrmann join him on string arrangements that are reminiscent of Claus Ogerman and Vince Mendoza’s work with Melody Gardot and Diana Krall.

“Dream Sequence” features Jacob Slous’ dreamy and restless drum soloing, with accordion as a subtle nod to the composer’s heritage. We’re still not sure who can sleep through the accordion, but you’re welcome to try. The love songs “How Could I Grow Tired of You” and “As I Am” borrow stylings from the pop idiom to tell candid stories. “I’d rather concern myself with being honest than with being clever”, she comments.

The only cover song on the album, “Chelsea Bridge”, won its spot above many other contenders. It is a long-time favourite of Savoie, who says, “the only way to improve this bridge is to add more Chelsea”, and indeed, Toronto’s own Chelsea McBride brings this Strayhorn classic to new heights.

Being heavily inspired by Strayhorn’s composition and arranging, especially “The Peaceful Side of Jazz”, Savoie has composed a four-part song cycle. It is based on his philosophy of four freedoms: freedom from hate, unconditionally; freedom from self-pity; freedom from the fear of possibly doing something that may help someone else more than it would you; and freedom from the kind of pride that could make a man feel that he is better than his brother. It is especially meaningful that the pursuit of these freedoms (not obligations) is voiced by a black, gay composer who found a way to creatively thrive and innovate despite not being properly credited for his work and facing various discriminations of 1900s America. Although not quite a household name, Strayhorn’s legacy continues to inspire composers and arrangers. The cellist George Crotty brings a wealth of cross-cultural music exploration and ultimate curiosity to his improvisation in these pieces. The fourth movement derives its text from the Hawaiian Huna practice of forgiveness, Ho’oponopono. Forgiveness, not out of requirement, opens the space to be free from superiority.

This album is a story of teamwork and perseverance. In a world that is stormy, confusing and exhausting, a song has the power to remind us of what’s important. This record reflects the struggle of the time in which it was created. Savoie says her ultimate wish is “to give someone a listening experience that lets them find some internal quiet”. Expect more music to come from this artist who is just coming onto the scene!
